Amy has always loved science fiction—books, movies, shows, and games. She was born in San Diego, California, and moved with her family to Vancouver, Washington, at the age of seven. After devouring some of the classics like Dune and Ender's Game in her tween years, she began writing science fiction and fantasy short stories.

In the ensuing years, Amy attended the Vancouver School of Arts and Academics, where she continued to study creative writing, visual art and played viola in the school orchestra. During this time, she began the very early sketches of what would eventually evolve into the Cadicle series.

Amy received a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology from Portland State University, and also pursued minors in Professional Writing and Business Administration. After graduating, she moved to Portland, Oregon, and began working in business development for an energy efficiency consulting firm. Over the next several years, she primarily wrote proposals to prospective utility clients and managed the proposal development process. She then transitioned from energy efficiency into the architectural, engineering and planning industry. However, she eventually succumbed to the writing bug.

Now a full-time author, Amy currently lives in Portland, Oregon, with her husband. When she's not writing, she enjoys travel, wine tasting, binge-watching TV series, and playing epic strategy board games.

ABOUT THE BOOK

Kali must stop a new threat rising in the Outer Colonies.

As kidnappings continue, it’s new TSS Agent Kali Wietris’ job to find out why. Her investigation points to a secretive planet, Red Ghost, where no one visits without an invitation.

Pirates are fifteen-year-old Treva’s best hope of finding a mother, who mysteriously disappeared when his absent father returned. With his mother’s warnings about criminal ties ringing in his head, Treva becomes increasingly worried about the cost of his father’s love.

Together, Kali and Treva must uncover Red Ghost’s secrets. The last thing they need is the complication of an experimental, sentient weapon known as the Destroyer of Worlds. With the fate of entire planets on the line, Kali must confront the rising threat and free the captives before it's too late.

PLOT SYNOPSIS - Shadow Rising (Shadowed Space Book 2)

Kali is a newly qualified TSS Agent whose mission is to find a number of women believed to have been abducted by Tregaren, the ex-Priest who independently pursued illegal genetic experiments. She is accompanied by Mika and the Bruisers band, who act as her cover.

Following the death of Luca, the Bruiser’s original bass player who died trying to protect a captive woman from Tregaren, Kali is left torn between fulfilling her mission and keeping the band safe. She takes on the role of bass player but struggles to learn to play the instrument. After inadvertently helping Tregaren to abduct the missing women, Mika is desperate to find them and attain redemption.

During the rescue of one new victim, Mika uses telepathy illegally to raid the kidnapper’s mind and discovers that everything leads to the highly secure, criminal-controlled planet Red Ghost. Kali is reluctant to allow the bandmembers to come to harm, but it’s her only lead. Using a music gig as cover, the group goes to Red Ghost. Their ship, the Sepiantia, is immediately locked down and they become captives of the criminals that run the planet, led by a man called Diamond-Boy.

Meanwhile, on Glaendor, fifteen-year-old Treva Marsh is struggling to get by after his mother has disappeared. Her sudden absence coincides with his long lost father’s return to his life, but Treva’s not sure if the two events are connected. What soon becomes clear, though, is that his father, Marco Steyn, is involved in the criminal underworld. When Treva discovers that a number of Marco’s ships regularly travel to a planet called Red Ghost, he decides that it’s as good a place as any to begin his search for his mother.

Treva strikes a deal with Herja, a pirate captain and his father’s enemy, in exchange for passage on her ship, the Hyperion, to Red Ghost. While in transit, Herja uses Treva’s insider information to perpetrate a raid on one of Marco’s ships, the Vector. However, when the raid goes sideways and the pirate crew is captured, Treva offers himself in exchange for the crew’s freedom.

Things take a turn on the Vector when Treva manages to elude his would-be captors. He finds a secure area of the ship to hide out, where he meets Mac and his charge: a valuable sentient weapon, Pesta—also known as ‘the destroyer of planets’. With Mac’s help, Treva is able to get back to the Hyperion with Mac and Pesta in tow.

As thanks for Treva’s selflessness in saving the Hyperion’s crew, Herja takes a genuine interest in helping Treva search for his mother. Her present life of piracy is driven purely by her desire to protect what is left of her people, so working with Treva, Marco’s son, is a great opportunity to deal with the true criminals who’ve been a thorn in her side. Herja heads her ship straight for Red Ghost—the heart of Marco Steyn’s criminal empire—to both help Treva find his mother and confront her enemies.

Paths converge on Red Ghost when Kali thwarts a mugging and saves Treva’s life in the process. Treva introduces Kali to Herja, and the two groups agree to help each other. They free the Sepiantia from lockdown, but they are forced to leave Owen Bruiser—the band’s leader—as a captive on Red Ghost.

A chance discovery leads the team to a secret base in subspace, where they use Treva’s connection to his father to get onto the Spadrosi Station. They realize that Marco’s family runs SPEAR Tec, a company that has secretly been continuing the genetics research and quest for immortality that Tregaren was pursing before his death. The Steyns also lead an organization called SPEAR, with which they plan to attack the Outer Colonies. The syndicate is run by Marco’s older brother, Andrei—known to most as the Commander.

As they investigate the secret base, Kali, Mika, Herja, and Treva discover forty-four missing women in stasis in a secure lab deep within the Spadrosi Station. When confronted by the infiltrators, Marco is forced to choose between his son and the rest of his family, and he chooses Treva. Marco kills the Commander’s personal guard and helps Kali lock down the lab with the captive women, including Treva’s mother.

In a final stand to protect the unconscious victims, Kali and Mika form a telepathic link to combine their power. As the situation becomes increasingly desperate, Marco sacrifices his life for his son. As Marco lies dying, Kali reads his mind at his request and learns about the Steyn family’s vast resources and connection to SPEAR. While the rest of the group remains trapped, Herja escapes. She uses the Sepiantia to attack the base and then calls for help before flying off in the Sepiantia with the rest of the Bruisers band, sans Owen.

TSS rescue ships arrive in time to save some of the captive women—as well as Kali, Mika, and Treva—but not before Commander Steyn escapes to Red Ghost. With Captain Vaughn in the Vector hunting Herja and Owen Bruiser held as his captive, the Commander is unfazed by the destruction of the Spadrosi Station. He sets his plan in motion to take control of the Outer Colonies.
